H. Douglas Dean P.H. D.

It is indeed a pleasure to be here this evening to see such a wonderful audience assembled because you are interested in the subject about which we are talking, the subject of Evolution. I made the statement last evening that those that are teaching Evolution have not awakened to the reality of things, that they are teaching something that someone taught them thirty years ago, and they have never stopped to investigate to see whether or not the things they are teaching be true. The greatest problem that faces the evolutionists today is the problem of the origin of life. Many scientists freely admit that the most baffling question that science faces today is the origin of life. The basis of our entire space program, the reason we are spending billions of dollars on a space effort is in order to determine whether or not there is life out there. That's our primary interest and concern. If we find life out there this may shed some information on the origin of life on this planet Earth. Science today is endeavoring to capture life in a test tube. You have read articles in Life Magazine and Time and numerous other articles in which the implication is made that science has now produced life in a test tube. This is an outright lie. I don't know of any other polite word to call it.

Our subject this evening deals primarily with the origin of life. Webster says that science is the knowledge of principles or facts. Throughout the course of this study it is my intent to examine the facts, and with this thought in mind let us approach this subject with a sense of respect, unbound by the strict limitations imposed by religious creed or scientific certainty as to the source and cause of the things considered in the material and to picture to the listener the admitted facts. Until 1859, it was generally believed that everything on the earth came into being as a result of miraculous creation by God, as recorded in Genesis 1 and 2. It was in this year that a man named Darwin published a book called the Origin of Species. This book was in direct contradiction to the Genesis account of origin. Up until this time very few people had ever questioned the Biblical account of creation, but now we have something on the horizon that threatened their faith. Certain leaders who were opposed to the workings and power of the church in the world. saw in this new philosophy something that they could use against the Christian faith. Men like Huxley began to spread Darwin's views concerning origins, and in effect to dispense with the idea of God.. From this work came the Theory of Evolution. The biological world immediately began to accept the views of Evolution until in the present age in which we now live, there are two generally accepted accounts as to the origin of things. The biological point of view is that all things came into being by mere chance and that God had nothing to do with it.

Which account then is true? The one given by the Bible or the one given by the biologist .in the textbooks today? In the words of Isaiah, “Come let us reason together.” In the field of biology the so-called “scientific method” is constantly emphasized. The biologist is continually observing the things that are going on around him. He observes some phenomena that exists, and this causes him to wonder and to ask the questions: When? How? Where? And What? In seeking the answer to the questions formulated, he proposes some theories to account for the phenomena observed. He then seeks to prove the theories that he has formulated by examining the facts and evidences, and by performing experiments. If the theories can be scientifically proven, then they are no long theories, but established facts. If the theory cannot be proven, then it remains a theory. Biological evolution remains today in the theory state, but we might add it's taught as a fact. Evolution has not been proven; therefore, it is not a fact but still a theory. The reason evolution predominates is because of a lack of exposure to the Bible. We might add that our federal government is seeing to it that there is less and less exposure to the Bible. Many accept evolution because it is the alternative to miraculous creation. They refuse to believe in the supernatural; therefore, they accept evolution.

The Bible is the only book that even offers an attempt to explain the orign of matter. The Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and Babylonians tell us nothing about the origin of matter, but the writings of the Hebrew people do. When science then is concerned with the origin of matter, why not go and ask the Hebrew people where did matter come from. They are the only people on earth today that tell us about the origin of matter. The Biologist of today will not even discuss the origin of matter. Unable to explain its origin, he just assumes that it has always been there.. He regards matter to have always been eternal in the past, but he knows that it will not always remain eternal. If matter has always been eternal in the past, it is logical to assume that it will remain eternal in the future. On the other hand, if matter is not to remain here eternally, then it is logical that it had not always been here. The scientist realizes that matter is constantly being dissipated. If this be true, then matter had to have a beginning somewhere. The scientist refuses to recognize an eternal Creator who created matter. In doing so he admits the eternity of matter, something he does not believe. If he admits the eternity of matter, then he can escape from acknowledging an eternal Creator. Dr. Frank Allen, noted physicist says, “If the universe has eternally existed, then since energy is constantly dissipated, every event

of which time is an element must have already taken place untold years ago, and nothing could occur now. An eternal universe would now be a
universe without events.” The Bible presents us with a logical view as to the origin of matter. John 1:3 says, “All things were made through Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made.” Dunbar, noted geologist, says, “It is now clear that the earth as such is not eternal,” indicating here that it had to have a beginning somewhere.” It is now clear to all that the earth and the solar system all had a common origin, regardless of what one might believe that common origin to have been. Even today scientists cannot agree on a theory as to the origin of the solar system. We have the “Big Bang Theory.” We have the “Steady State Theory,” plus other theories. The Scientist says that the earth was void and waste in the beginning. This is in perfect agreement with the Biblical statement, “And the earth was void and without form”(Genesis 1:1).

Today the same as yesterday people are continually asking the question, “What is life?” Many have unsuccessfully attempted to answer this vital and important question . Science has solved many riddles, unlocked nature's storehouses, and brought many blessings to man. But for the question, “What is life?” science has no answer. Many have tried to define life only to leave it unexplained. We know that life teems all around us in earth, rivers, oceans and air. Life clothes itself in many forms. The energizing power–life itself–that resides in material forms can neither be seen under the microscope, weighed in the balance, nor caught in the chemist's test tube. We know much about the laws by which life is governed, and we know what happens when we violate God's law of life. Working in harmony with these laws, we are able to make both plants and animals better to serve our needs. Think of all the hybrid plants and animals which we have been able to produce by working in harmony with nature's–that is–God's law. And yet the law, “reproduce after its own kind” still holds true today.

Life itself is unexplained. To many people life is immortal. Life is an instrument which serves the purpose of the Supreme Intelligence. Another question that is continually asked is, “How did life begin?” In answer to this question, one might say that today there is a point in the mystery of life's beginnings where the scientist must stop for lack of evidence. Even the most learned biologist is astounded concerning the origin of life. Being a scientist, he says that he cannot believe n miracles; but yet he asks that man believe all life on this earth came from a single cell by a process known as evolution. Having examined various works concerning this problem of problems, I have come to the conclusion

that scientists confess no knowledge and have no definite theory as to how the first life was produced on the earth. The currently accepted theory in our own United States is that proposed by Communist, Oparin, who wrote the book The Origin of Life. We prefer to accept a Russian Communistic theory as to an origin of life rather than to accept the writings of the Hebrew people concerning the origin of life. .Hunter and Hunter in their textbook, “College Zoology” says that the origin of life is one of the most difficult questions the biologists have attempted to answer, and at the present time the answer is not available. Darwin frankly admits that “science throws no light on the origin of life.” Tyndall says, “From the beginning to the end of the inquiry, there is not, as you have seen, a shadow of evidence in favor of the doctrine of spontaneous generation. In the lowest as in the highest of organized creatures, the method of nature is that life shall be the antecedent of life.” Professor Conn in the same work said, “There is not the slightest evidence that living matter could arise from non-living matter.” But yet people like Oparin, and many of the scientists in our own nation , admit that there had to be spontaneous generation in the beginning. The noted evolutionist, H.G. Wells says, “We do not know how life began upon earth. Biologists–that is to say, students of life–have made guesses, but we will not discuss them here.” All agree with Osborn's statement that “the mode of the origin of life is the purest speculation.” That natural law quickened dead matter into life is the bedrock on which the whole superstructure of evolution is built.

That God by a miracle breathed life into the first life forms and endowed each with the power to transmit life to offspring is the foundation of the theory of creation. It is only fair to state that neither theory can be proved by actual demonstration. The theory accepted must be accepted by faith based on reasoning and facts. Which of the two theories is supported by the stronger evidence must be left to the individual. Both cannot be true. Those that accept the position that God created man in His own image do so as a matter of faith, but it is a faith based upon more reasonable grounds than the evolutionary theory. Those that reject the Biblical account of man's creation do so because of its miraculous nature. This is rather inconsistent because the evolutionary theory of man's origin, even if it were true, would be a greater miracle, if possible, than the Genesis account of the origin of man. In other words, belief in the evolutionary theory requires a greater faith than does faith in the Biblical account of the creation of man. If the theory of creation by miracle is rejected, the only alternative is spontaneous generation. Any biologist knows that there is no such thing as spontaneous generation. The basis for believing that God is the

source of life is based first on the total lack of any evidence that natural law could have ever produced life. Second, this view harmonizes with every discovered fact relating to life.
In my opinion the first chapter of Genesis contains the real story of creation and the origin of life upon the earth. Its essence has not been changed by knowledge acquired since it was written. I want us to look in our closing moments at the Genesis record and then tomorrow evening our study will be entitled, “Another Look At Genesis,.” and we will go into a detailed study of what Genesis says and what it does not say. We will read from the Bible and contrast that with what science in general teaches.

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form and void.” This is the original chaos of an unformed earth.

“Darkness was on the face of the deep.” Science tells us that in the beginning the oceans were mostly in the sky, as impenetrable clouds, and no light could reach the earth.

“And God said, Let there be light, and there was light.” Science says that in the beginning the clouds were cleared away. The earth had cooled; and the rotation of the earth made night and day.

Genesis says, “God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters.” Science tells us that out of the waters which covered the earth rose the continents, and the dry land appeared and above the earth the atmosphere.

“And God said, Ler the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed.....” Science has agreed that the first form of life on earth was vegetarian–that is, plant life.

“And God made two great lights.....He made the stars also.” Science says that the sun and the moon became visible through the clouds, and as the clouds finally cleared the stars appeared also.

“And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.” Science says that all moving forms of life originated in the water.

“And God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth.” Science teaches us that the earth soon became populated with animals after the seas had firs t been populated. That is, there was life in the ocean
before it appeared on land.

“And God said, Let us make man in our image.....and let them have dominion over the fish,...fowl..., cattle...., and . over all the earth....And God blessed them and said unto them, Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth.” Science has agreed that man does have dominion over all forms of life on earth, and science has agreed that man has multiplied and filled the earth.

Today as we look at life we see life pushing forward; we see it building itself, repairing itself, extending itself. We see life creating the new. We ask the question, “Is this intelligence? Is it instinct, or does it just happen by accident?” I believe all of this comes as an expression of Divine power and that there is nothing material about it.

Thank you.
