By : Lonnie Branam [ Sermon God's Quarrel With Gentiles ]

Lonnie Branam

Romans 1:18-25 says, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man–and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather thn the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.”

This passage reveals the quarrel God had with the ancient Gentiles which continues to this day. The word of God in the first century A.D. divided the human race into three divisions: the Jews, the Gentiles and the Church of God, also called the Church of Christ. Paul had never been to Rome, so he wrote this letter to Christians to fully acquaint them with the Christian religion. The book of Romans is the most complete analysis of the Christian religion in the New Testament. The city of Rome was the center of the Gentile world, and Paul reveals in this letter why the Gentile people of the world must convert to the Christian religion in order to go to heaven. Paul was an inspired historian, and he takes us back to the earliest period of Gentile history, and reveals the amazing fact that from their earliest existence on earth, they believed in the God of the Bible; they knew God created the universe and the human race, but they turned away from Him. They failed, in their duties toward God and toward their fellow human beings. He describes a controversy between God and the Gentiles, a quarrel God had with the Gentiles early in their history. A quarrel is defined as a complaint, a cause for dispute, and it implies verbal strife marked by anger and resentment. The Gentiles once had a true knowledge of Jehovah, but they foolishly lost it, and this infuriated God. The quarrel God has with the Gentile people of the world is their failure in their duties to the one true God, the shameful thing they did to Him, and the sinful way they lived their lives which He gave them. God fell out with them from the time of their earliest existence on earth, and it continues to this day with all Gentiles who are not Christians.

My first comment on this passage is that it contains the true history of the human race between the flood of Noah and the time of Abraham who lived about 2,000 B.C. Permit me to present a history lesson on the earliest beginning of the human race, as revealed by inspired historians who knew what they were talking about. Moses and Paul are the only historians who have written about human history between the flood of Noah and the time of Abraham, a period of some 400 to 500 years. We cannot precisely date the time of the flood, but in the studied opinion of Biblical scholars the flood occurred about 2500 B.C., plus or minus a few hundred years. Romans 1 contains an authentic historical record, approved by God, embracing several hundred years between the flood of Noah and the time of Abraham. This was the earliest period of Gentile history. Modern-day history books do not tell us anything about this early Gentile period of time. They do not know anything about this historical period. Most all Archaeologists reject what the Bible says about this period of time because they can find no evidence of it in the rocks and layers of the earth. They reject anything as true history written in the Bible before the time of Abraham. In rejecting the historical accuracy of the first 11 chapters of Genesis, Gentile scientists, historians, Archaeologists and Geologists shamefully rob the human race of some 2,000 years of human history. They leave mankind in utter darkness of the first 2,000 years of human history and substitute an imaginary historical period that never existed. . That is a crime that modern Gentiles have committed both against God and the human race. The Atheistic theory of Evolution is fully discussed elsewhere on this Website. The human race can have no confidence whatever in what modern history books say about earliest part of human history. God's quarrel with Gentiles continue to this day.

Someone might say, ”How do we know that the earliest history of Gentile nations began immediately after the flood? We know because human history had a first beginning and second beginning after the flood with eight people . and their descendants. This truth is verified by the book of Genesis, Jesus Christ and the apostles of Christ. To reject this evidence is blaphemy. The flood of Noah is no myth; it is pure, actual history. In addition, the earliest historical writing on record was done by the Egyptians, and the Alphabet does not go back farther than about 3,000 B.C.(World Book Encyclopedia). Any history or happenings before 3500 B.C. are considered Pre-history. Pre-history is implied history without historical verification. and belongs to the realm of theory and speculation. . The flood marks the dividing point between History and Pre-history. The alphabet must have been invented shortly after the flood. This is another indisputable evidence that man has not been on the earth for millions of

years, for he didn't learn how to write until about 5,000 years ago. It is ridiculous to believe it took man millions and millions of years to learn how to write. It is probable that Noah and his three sons had the ability to write the one known language of earth, but when God confused the languages of earth, it not only complicated the ability to communicate but also the ability to write. Only eight people survived the flood–Noah, his wife, Shem, Ham Japheth, and their wives. Japheth and Ham were fathers of the Gentile nations. Shem was the father of the Hebrew people and other related people.

When the Gentiles became settled in their lands sometime after flood, Romans 1 tells us how they angered God, misrepresented Him and told an awful lie about Him. The book of Genesis tells us precious little of the first 500 years after the blood, but what Genesis leaves out Romans 1 fills in. Thus, the first thing I would have you remember about Romans 1:18-32 is that it is one of the most valuable historical documents in the possession of the human race. It discusses the early history of mankind. .. It contains truth that God wants the human race to know, and it reveals why He is so angry with the human race.

My second comment on Romans 1 is that it was during this early Gentile period, following the flood , that the Gentiles got into serious trouble with God. During these years God had a rift with the Gentile nations, a quarrel if you please. We are introduced to the dispute in Romans 1:18, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness.” They began to live like this after the flood; they were still living like this in 55 A.D. when Paul wrote this letter; and they continue to live like this today.. The word ungodliness means a failure in our duties to God, and the term unrighteousness is another word for in justice, which is a failure in our duties to our fellow men. God charges the
Gentile world with two crimes, one against God Himself, and one against their fellow human beings. . God condemned them for their failure to reverence and woship Him as He commanded, and for the evil injustice they practiced against their fellow human beings. Paul elaborates on these two indictments in the remainder of the chapter, both of which constituted the rift between God and the larger part of the human race. This was the Patriarchal Age of human history, and there were commandments of God relative to the way He should be worshiped and how human beings were to treat one another. The early Gentiles would not keep God's Patriarchal form of religion. First of all, God became angry with those ancient people because they failed in their duties toward God. They

failed to reverence, honor and worship Him. In addition they failed to express their gratitude, for all He did for them. It was by Him they lived, moved and had their very being. Rather than offering Him their sinceere worship and thanksgiving, they did something which utterly degraded the person and glorious nature of the one true God. They slandered and misrepresented Him and caused God to lose much of the love and respect due to Him from His creatures. What they did is carefully recorded in Romans 1:19-21, “Because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.”

The previous verse states that they knew the truth about the Deity and eternal power of the Creator God., but they suppressed that truth in unrighteousness. Verse 18 reveals that they knew the truth about God, but they held that truth in unrighteousness. They quenched that truth or held it down by their unreligious and immoral conduct. They didn't want to live the good way God wanted them to live, so they abandoned God. . They knew the truth about God's existence which was given to the human race first by Adam and Eve, and men Like Enoch and Noah who walked with God and faithfully served Him. . After the flood the truths of the Patriarchal relgion were handed down by Noah, Shem, Ham and Japheth., Hence, the Gentile world had the truth about God and true religion, and what they did was inexcusable. God charged them with holding down the the truth in unrighteousness. This means they quenched the truth and ignored it because of their unreligious and immoral conduct. The first thing they did that angered God was to quench, suppress and hold down the truth which He had made known to them. The knowledge of the Creator God revealed in the Bible was universal knowledge and known by all nations in the world, but they glorified Him not as God, neither were they thankful. God is still angry with the Gentiles to this day for supporting these crimes against the one true God.

To hide, suppress and ignore the knowledge of the Creator God was bad enough, but the thing that really infuriated God is revealed in Romans 1:25, “Who exchanged the truth of God for the lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.” God says that what they did was to tell the world a lie about Him. Verse 23 says, “They changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man, birds, four-footed animals and creeping things.” They invented a new form of

religion and worshiped by bowing down to statues of men and women, bulls, cows, snakes and all kinds of four-footed animals. They compared the incorruptible God to images of humans and animals, and worshiped by bowing their backs to God and their faces to the idols. When they taught this they told a lie on God, for God is not like men or animals. They introduced a new system of religion to mankind, and it was being practiced in Rome by Gentiles when Paul wrote this letter. The new form of religion they introduced to mankind is called Idolatry. This system of worship was a curse to mankind for over 3,000 years. The descendant sf Shem were the godly branch of mankind after the flood, and they kept alive the truth of God's existence and the true worship of God on the earth.. .

Modern day Gentiles in the last three centuries of the Christian age have told another lie on God, and it is far, far worse than the lie post-flood Gentiles told on Him. Modern day Gentiles have convinced a large part of the earth that God is dead. They deny the very existence of God The idea of a Creator God in the Bible is a myth, just one of the many Hebrew myths, tales and traditions. They are suppressing the the truth about God just as did the early Gentiles. They have introduced to the world a new theory that explains the origin of the universe and the human race. No one made the world; there is no Creator. Our solar system originated quite accidentally by natural laws. Man was not created by a Divine Beng out of the dust of the ground; he came into existence by evolution over millions and millions of years. We came into existence by evolution from the animal world. A mother Ape or Ape-like creature gave birth to the first human being, and all other human beings came from this one ape-like human being. There is no longer a need to believe in a God who has to be worshiped or a God who will punish mankind for sinful living. This idea is taught in all state institutions of higher learning in the entire world. This is another lie told about God. It may just be the greatest lie that has ever been told to the human race.

The Bible s says God created the first human being out of the dust of the g round, and other human beings descended from him. But most of the Gentile world won't believe that, but they will believe the first man evolved from the animal world. They will believe that an Ape produced the first man and all of us came from this ape-like creature. If you can believe that you can believe the moon is made out of blue cheese. You judge which explanation makes the most sense.. The Gentiles have done it again. This is the worst and the biggest and most unbelievable lie that has ever been told on Almighty God , in whom we live, move and have our being. . That mankind

is indebted to the ape- world for their existence is the second lie told on God. It is easier to believe the Bible than this fairy tale. There is nothing scientific about it.

Finally, Romans 1 tells us what God did to the early Gentile world for telling the first lie on Him . Verse 24 says, “Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their heats, to dishonor their bodies among themselves. Verse 26, 27 says, “ For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise, also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.” Verses 28-32 says, “And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting, being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness, ful of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, , unmerciful, who knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same, but also approve of those who practice them.” Take a long look at that list of evil human characteristics. That is how people live without God, without the help and guidance of the one true and living God. God blames the early post-flood Gentiles for the introduction of homosexuality to the human race after the flood. God says this awful practice dishonors the body, is contrary to nature, shameful, a vile desire, and morally unclean. Those early Gentiles also taught the world how to be unrighteous, how to unjustly treat fellow human beings, and how to take advantage of them. Over 20 of the most evil characteristics of the human personality is listed by the Holy Spirit. It shows just how bad we humans can become when we live without God.

We are told three times that God “gave up” the early Gentiles. They gave up God, and God gave them up. Paul gives us a frightening picture of what happens to people who do not believe in God, who do not worship God, and who will not obey God. They rejected God and He rejected them. Being abandoned of God, both their men and women degraded themselves by the practice of homosexuality which is queer, unnatural and degrading. It is cleqrly taught here that homosexuals are people who have abandoned God, and God has abandoned them. In addition they became filled with every vice and crime. This is a perfect picture of the Gentile world in general in the 21st century. God blames the early Gentiles for giving all these sinful ideas to the human race.

In this chapter it is said three times that God , “gave up” the
early Gentiles.“ God gives people up when He ceases to restrain them from evil or protect them against it. Or, in other words, He gives them up when He lets them alone to do as they please without hindrance from Him in the matter of sin. This clearly implies that till God gives a people up, they are always under His providential and protective care. Language could not more clearly imply the constant oversight of God in the affairs of men and the world. Let this modern generation take warning from the truths revealed in this chapter. After this long list of human vice and crime, verse 32 says, “Knowing the righteous judgment of God that those who practice such things are deserving of death.” Some think this means they are worthy of severe punishment both in this world and in the world to come. Others think death here means the penalty of the law, all those evils by which sin is punished. I agree with those who understand the word death as meaning natural death. The meaning is that such evil people don't deserve to exist on God's good earth. God allows them to continue to exist, but they do not really deserve it. God did not make this earth for people like that. Paul has set forth his case that the Gentile world is in dire need of the gospel of Christ, which is God's power to salvation. Gentiles all over the world have been reconciled to God and redeemed by Christ Jesus by obedience to the gospel of Christ, which Paul says is, “The power of God to salvation.”
