2 Corinthians 4: 3-6

This Bible message is based on a passage of scripture found in 2 Corinthians 4:3-6 which says, “But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this world has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ should shine on them. For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. For it is God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shined in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the f ace of Jesus Christ.” I would like to center our thinking on the statement made in verse 6, “For it is God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shined in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” Three sparkling truths are revealed in this passage. We learn from this passage that there are two forms of light and two forms of darkness in the world. There was a first creation of light and a second creation of light, and in each creation it resulted in a great change in the earth. In addition, the earth has undergone two different forms of darkness. Among the very first things God created was physical light and that was just before the earth emerged after being engulfed by water and total darkness. The second light was the light of the gospel which is said to be shining from the face of Jesus Christ.

I call your attention first to God's first creation of light. The first light was created at the beginning of the world. There is no proof-positive evidence that the earth has been here over four or five thousand years. Evolutionary evidence is not proof-positive evidence; it is no more than prehistorical theory, speculation and human opinion before anyone existed to verify the speculations. To believe it is to take the word of fallible men over the infallible word of God. . The theory that the earth has been here billions of years is anti-Bible, anti-God, and anti-Christ. Human wisdom that rejects the Biblel account of the origin of the universe and life doses not deserve to be considered by God-loving people. The text says that God commanded light to shine out of darkness, and this was a reference to Genesis 1:3. Light was among the very first things God created. No one knows exactly what light is. We do know that it is a combination of all the beautiful colors in the rainbow. Light comes to us from a nearby star that we know as the sun, and it comes to us also from the countless worlds of distant stars. Physical light reveals some of the glory and power of Almighty God, for it travels at the speed of 186,284 miles per second, the swiftest of all moving objects. It just takes a few minutes for light to leave the sun and arrive on earth. The light you see at anytime was at the sun just a few minutes before you saw it.

The existence of light is an indisputable proof of the existence of the Almighty God of the Bible. . Human beings, no matter how intelligent, cannot create anything that moves 186, 284 miles per second. It is superhuman any way you explain it. A person who does not believe the speed of light is a superhuman production is rightly spoken of in the Bible in these words, “The fool has said in his heart there is no God.” All atheists remind me of the man who walked on two wooden legs. His house caught on fire and suffered some fire damage, but he was burned to the ground. When he applied for insurance coverage, he was turned down and was told he didn't have a leg to stand on.
Light is important to us in many ways. Plants cannot grow without it , and all animals eat plants or eat other animals which eat plants. The light given off by the sun rules our daily life. Most of us work when it is day and rest when it is night. Without sunlight every living thing would starve to death. All living things are dependant on the food that plants make or upon other living things that eat that food. Many of the earliest inhabitants of mankind. who apostatized from the worship e of the one true Creator- God, understood the importance of sunlight to their survival. They fell into idolatry and became worshipers of the sun. Sun worship was one of the earliest forms of idolatry and flourished in the land of Egypt as early as 3000 B.C.
Secondly, there is an implied connection in this passage between the original creation of light in the beginning and the dawn of gospel light in 2,000 B.C. Each of these creations was meant for the good of the whole world. According to the best manuscripts, 2 Cor. 4:6 reads like this, “Because it is God who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness, who has shined in our hearts for the illumination of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” What an interesting statement from the Holy Spirit!. The gospel of Christ is compared to light, and it is said it illuminates the soul. This is figurative language, and this light is said to be the glorious knowledge of God.. Moreover, it is said this glorious knowledge is light emanating from the face of Jesus Christ. This is a beautiful figure of speech based on an experience Moses had when he talked face to face with God. This is a reference to the shining face of Moses when God spoke to him face to face, when he received the ten commandment law. When Moses went into the presence of God to receive the law of Moses, his face began to shine. The knowledge he received from God was so holy and wonderful that it made his facial skin shine. His shining face symbolized the glory of the Ten Commandment law God communicated to him. When he left God's presence, his face continued to shine for some time, and this frightened the Israelites, and they would not come around Moses. Therefore, Moses wore a veil to alleviate the fear of he people.

However every time He went into God's presence his face had a supernatural glow. The statement in verse 6 that God commanded light to shine out of darkness is the light that now shines in our hearts and gives spiritual light to the whole world. . God's second creation of light symbolizes the glorious knowledge of God which Jesus Christ has brought to the world from the very presence of God the Father. As the Old Testament revelation made the face of Moses shine, the New Testament revelation is said to make the face of Christ shine, and this light is transforming the lives of men and women all over the world.
However, we cannot see the actual face of Jesus, so it must mean that the knowledge which Christ has revealed to the world, first by His presence on earth and afterward through the inspired apostles, reflects God's glorious knowledge to offer eternal life to mankind.. The knowledge that is in the 27 books of the New Testament is as glorious wonderful and essential to the world as the light of the sun. The gospel of Christ is as important to the world as the original creation of light. The gospel is a luminary greater than the sun, and it is a bright shining light in the moral and religious darkness of the earth. God created sunlight at the beginning of the world; He created the gospel light of God's glorious knowledge in the first century A.D. As physical life cannot exist on earth without God's first creation of physical light, so spiritual or a godly life on earth and eternal life in heaven cannot exist without the second creation of spiritual light.
The prediction of this second creation of light was predicted in Isaiah 60:1-3, “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord: is risen upon you. . For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and deep darkness the people. But the Lord will arise over you, and His glory will be seen upon you. The Gentiles have come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.” This was a prediction that this new glorious light would arise first on Jerusalem. The darkness in this passage was the moral and religious darkness that had fallen on Israel and the entire world just prior to the coming of Jesus in the first century A.D. This darkness put the earth in a most dangerous condition. The Old Testament closed with this waning from God in Malachi 4:5,6: “Behold I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord, and he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the hearts of the children to the fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.” It does not say what that curse would be, but the moral and religious darkness was so great that some judgment from God was about to fall on mankind. The only thing that saved this earth from some great judgment was the coming of Christ and the second creation of light. Jesus said the Elijah in this passage referred to John the Baptist who introduced Him to the nation

as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. . It took another miracle from God like that one at the first creation of light.. God a second time said, “Let there be light,” and Jesus the Divine Son of God was born. The second person of the Godhead indwelled Him, making Jesus of Nazareth an incarnate Deity. He lived a perfect life, showed us what Jehovah was like, worked great wonders and miracles, and died on the cross as our Passover Lamb for the sins of the whole world. He arose from the dead, ascended to heaven, and ten days later established the Kingdom of God on this earth, a kingdom unlike any kingdom ever to exist on earth. This is a brief description of God's second creation of light that now shines down on the human race.
A third related thought is expressed in 2 Corinthians 4:3,4, “But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to them who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, should shine on them. “ The Old King James version says, “If our gospel be hid, it is hid to them who are lost.” How can the Gospel be compared to the light of the sun when scripture says it hidden or veiled from the eyes of most of the world? How can so many people be lost when the glorious light of the soul-saving gospel of Christ is streaming down all around them like the sun lightens the earth? The answer is that Satan, the god of this world, has blinded the minds of unbelieving people. The title of god is applied to Satan by way of resemblance. This word is sometimes applied to whatever can in any respect be likened to God. The resemblance is that the greater part of the human race worships Satan and is controlled by him. Satan is a fallen angel, and God's plan allows this angel to test the humana race. God is using this means to select that part of the human race who shall one day live forever in heaven. We must fight this angel who disobeyed God and caused every human being to go to the grave. We must overcome the evil this angel has introduced to mankind if we hope to go to heaven. Jesus said it is the overcomers who will go to heaven. Satan is dedicated to hiding God's second creation of light by filling the earth with moral and religious darkness. . Satan veils or hides the light of the gospel from the minds of human beings by filling their hearts with unbelief, doubt, human praise and honor and by filling it with the love of evil things. For people to serve and worship Satan, it is not necessary that they should know that such a thing exists. It is enough that he actually controls them. So people can have the gospel shining brightly all around about them and directed fully upon them and yet close their eyes and refuse to see it. The second creation of light is the glorious knowledge of God as revealed to the world by Jesus Christ. You cannot see this light with your physical eyes. It can be seen only with the eyes of

understanding, with the eyes of the soul and the mind. It can only be perceived by the inward man of the soul. With the exception of the Christian world, the moral and religious darkness predicted by Isaiah still hangs over the world of unbelievers. When Jesus lived here on earth, the apostle John said of Him, “In him was life and the life was the light of men”(John 1:4). In Him was life means He is both the creator and sustainer of life. He showed by example the kind of life that God loves and approves.. He has the power which creates life and sustains it. Sadly, the apostle John also said, “And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” But Christians have comprehended itt. The apostle Peter said this of Christians,”You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light”
( I Peter 2:9).
