WHAT SAITH THE SCRIPTURES?
The subject of this Bible message is the question stated in Gal. 4:30 which says, “What saith the Scripture?”(Old King James version). The preeminence of scripture as cur religious guide is expressed in Luke 16:28—31, “They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. If they hear not Noses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.” In reply to a religious question Jesus said, “What is written in the Law? how readest thou?(Luke 10:26). These scriptures unite in the affirmation of a religious principle of the utmost importance, namely that Scripture contains an authoritative answer to all questions relating to duty and destiny.
This lesson shall assume the form of questions and answers from the Bible. The sermon will proceed on this plan. I will ask the question and answer it with a direct statement from the Bible. After the question is asked, that which follows will be pure scripture. Book, chapter, and verse will be given after each quotation which will enable you to turn and read the passages for yourself. The Bible itself will answer your questions in such plain and understandable language that they need no interpretation or human comment from men. These questions and answers are designed to impress upon our minds that Jesus has an answer for every question relative to our salvation and eternal destiny. Even though the answers contradict popular religious conceptions, even though they are foreign to all you have ever been taught, it is my sincere prayer that you may study them with the full realization that it is God speaking to you through His divine Son. The New Testament says in Hebrews 12:25, “See that ye refuse not him that speaketh.” Now let
us consider what the Scripture says about some of the greatest questions of life.
WHO HAS THE COMPLETE AND FINAL AUTHORITY IN RELIGION?
“For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shell ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people” (Acts 3:22,23). “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, bath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also He made the worlds” (Hebrews 1:1,2). “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth” (Matt. 28:18).
IF CHRIST HAS FINAL AUTHORITY, WHAT ABOUT PARENTS?
“He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: end he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me”(Matt. 10:37).
IF CHRIST HAS FINAL AUTHORITY, WHAT ABOUT SCHOLARS? “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness"(I Cor.3:l9).“Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by tM foolishness of preaching to save them that believe”(I Cor. 1:20,21).
HOW DOES HE SPEAK TO US TODAY? “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shell make you free”(John 8:31,32). “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words hath one that judgeth him; the word that I have spoken, the same will judge him in the last day.(John 12:48)
DOES THE OLD TESTAMENT APPLY TO US TO DAY?
“Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster”(Gal. 3:24,25). “Wherefore my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the boy of Christ, that ye should be married to another, even to Him who is raised from the dead,thatwe should bring forth fruit unto God.”(Romans 7:4). Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross. Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holy day, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days...” (Col. 24-16)
IS IT TRUE THAT THE NEW TESTAMENT THEN IS THE COMPLETE AND FINAL AUTHORITY IN RELIGIOUS MATTERS?
“For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place babe been sought for the Second. For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.....In that he saith a new covenant he hath made the first old. How that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away” (Heb0 8:7,8,13). Beloved when I gave all diligence to wrie unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints” (Jude 3). “According as his divine power bath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue”(2 Peter 1:3). “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed” (Gal. 1:8). “Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Chrisst, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. If there come uny unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him Godspeed”(2 John 10,11).
IS IT TRUE THAT THE CHURCH IS NOT ESSENTIAL? THAT ONE DOESN'T HAVE TO BE A MEMBER TO BE SAVED?
“And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved” (Acts 2:47).”Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Spirit bath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he bath purchased with his own blood” (Acts 20:28). “For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body” (Eph. 5:23).
ARE WE SAVED BY FAITH ALONE?
"Even so faith, if it bath not works, is dead, being alone” (James 2:17). “Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble” (James 2:19). “But wilt thou know, 0 vain man, that faith without works is dead?” (James 2:20) “Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. (James 2:24)
IS OBEDIENCE ALSO ESSENTIAL TO OUR SALVATION? “And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him” (Heb. 5:9). “Not every one that saith unto rue, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven” (Matt. 7:21). “And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him” ( I John 2:3,4).
IS THERE AN EXAMPLE OF ANY PERSON BEING SAVED WITHOUT BAPTISM AFTER THE CHURCH WAS ESTABLISHED?
“Then they that gladly received his word were baptized; and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls” (Acts 2:41). “But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men :nd women” (Acts 8:12). “And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he commanded the chariot to stand still; and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch and he baptized him.”(Acts 8:36-38) “And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days” (Acts 10:48). “And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come iinto my house, and abide there. And she constrained us” (Acts 16:15). “And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized” (Acts 18:8). “And when they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Acts 19:5). “And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord” (Acts 22:16).

SINCE IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO BECOME A CHRISTIAN WITHOUT BAPTISM, WHAT DOES BAPTISM DO FOR A PERSON? “Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, excppt a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter Into the kingdom of God”(John 3:5). “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38). “For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ”(Gal. 3:27). “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death, that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life”(Romans 6:4). “The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), by the resurrection of Jesus Christ” (I Peter 3:21).
THE BLOOD OF CHRIST FORGIVES IN THE ACT OF BAPTISM; HOW OLD MUST ONE BE IN ORDER TO BE BAPTIZED?
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved but he that believeth not shall be damned”(Mark 16:16). “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls” (Acts 2:41). “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38).
IS IT TRUE THAT BABIES ARE SINNERS AT BIRTH? “The soul that sinneth it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him”(Ezekiel 18:20). “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law”(I John 3:4).
IS IT GOD'S WILL THAT I CHRISTEN NY BABY? “But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men”(Matt. 15:9). “For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin with us first, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?( I Peter 4:17,18).
WHAT IS THE ONLY MODE OF BAPTISM DIVINELY APPROVED BY GOD?
“Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death; that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life”(Romans 6:4). “Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead” (Col. 2:12).
WHO MAY BE SAVED? “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). “Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: but in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.”(Acts 10:34,35) “For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior; who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth”(I Timothy 2:4).
CAN A WOMAN BE A MINISTER AND CONDUCT THE WORSHIP OF GOD?
“But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in thc transgression” (I Timothy 2;11—14). “Let your women keep silence in th~ churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also said the law. And if they will learn
anything, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church”(I Corinthians 14:34).

IS IT RIGHT FOR CHRISTIANS TO WEAR MAN-MADE NAMES?
“Now this I say that every one of you saith, I am of Paul and I of Apollos and I of Cephas and I of Christ. Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul” (I Corinthians 1:12,13). “For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? For while one saith, I am of Paul and another, I am of Apollos are ye not carnal?” (I Cor. 3:3,4) What name should God's people wear? “And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” (Acts 11:26)
WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE CHURCH ACCORDING TO THE NEW TESTAMENT? “Salute one another with an holy kiss. The churches of Christ salute you” (Romans 16:16). “Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours” (I Cor. 1:2).
WHAT IS THE THREEFOLD PURPOSE OF MARRIAGE?
“And the Lord God said, It is not goopd that the man should be alone I will make him an help meet for him”(Genesis 2:18). “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, ard multiply, and replenish the earth” (Gen. 1:27,28). “Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.”(I Cor. 7:1,2).
WHEN A MAN AND WOMAN LIVE TOGETHER WITHOUT BEING MARRIED, WHAT SIN IS COMMITTED?
“Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband” (I Cor. 7:2). “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor effeminite, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God” (I Cor. 6:9,10).
WHAT SIN IS COMMITTED WHEN A SINGLE PERSON HAS SEX BEFORE MARRIAGE? “Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinncth against his own body” (I Cor. 6:18).
WHAT SIN IS COMMITTED WHEN A MARRIED PERSON HAS AN AFFAIR AND INDULGES IN SEX.“Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery, but I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart” (Matthew 5:27,28).
WHAT IS THE ONE CAUSE FOR DIVORCE PERMITTED BY JESUS CHRIST? ”But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery” (Matt.5:32). “He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives; but from the beginning it was not so. And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery, and whoso marries her which is put away doth commit adultery” (Matt. 19:8,9).
ONCE A PERSON HAS BELIEVED, REPENTED, AND BEEN BAPTIZED INTO CHRIST, CAN THE CHRISTIAN FALL AWAY AND BE LOST? “Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall”(I Cor. 10:12). “But I keep under my body, and bring it into
subjection lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway” (I Cor. 9:27). “For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it,
to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
