Genesis 3:9-15 says, "And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. And he said, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded you that you should not eat? And the man said, The woman whom you gave to be with me she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that you have done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because you have done this, you are cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon your belly you shall go, and dust shall you eat all the days of your life: and I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; it shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel."

Our study this message are the words which God spoke to the serpent in the garden of Eden. After tempting Adam and Eve to transgress the simple command of their Maker, all three parties are summoned into the presence of God, and each is successively addressed. Before bringing Adam and Eve to justice, God announced punishment first on the serpent: "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; it shall bruise your head, and you shalt bruise his heel." This is the very first prophecy of any kind in the Bible and it also holds the distinction of being the very first prophecy of Christ. The passage is far too rich and deep to fully analyze in one short message but I will unfold as much of it as suitable in one study and complete the study in the succeeding message on this website: "The Gospel of the Serpent??s Doom."

First, I would impress on your minds that the serpent in this text was a real serpent. It would be an awful blunder to regard this story of the serpent as a fable. It is said nowadays by the so-called advanced thinkers of the modern school that the first eleven chapters of Genesis is an allegory and should not be taken literally. However Jesus quoted Genesis 2:24 saying...., "Have you not read that He who made them in the beginning made them male and female..."(Matthew 19:4-6). Jesus settled forever the truth that Genesis 1 and 2 should be accepted literally and not figuratively as the true origin of the universe and human life. An allegory is a story used for purposes of illustration and may not be a true story. Occasionally, we come across a preacher or teacher in the church who takes this approach to Genesis 3. Now there is nothing in Genesis to mark where history ends and parable begins, for it all runs on as actual, literal history. If any part of this narrative is allegorical, no part of it is factual history. It seems to me that if there was only an allegorical serpent, there was an allegorical paradise, allegorical rivers, and allegorical trees. Logic demands we say that the man and woman were allegorical, that the chapter which speaks of their creation was allegorical, and really the only thing that exists is an allegorical heaven and earth. If the book of Genesis be an allegory, it is an allegory all the way through, and you have an allegorical Abraham, with allegorical circumcision, an allegorical Jacob, and it is not unfair to push the theory onward and impute to Jacob allegorical descendants called Jews. But if you borrow any money of Jacob
