By : Lonnie Branam [ Sermon Noah Warned About The Flood ]

Genesis 9:9-22

The New Testament makes this comment on Noah and the flood in Hebrews 11:7, "By  faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the worll and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith." Peter makes the comment that God has given mankind three evidences that He will not strive with a sinful world forever. The firrst evidence is that God did not spare the angels who sinned but cast them out of heaven and down to Tartarus to await the final judgment. The second evidence is God did not spare the ancient world but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of right-eousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly. The third evidence is God turned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to thos who a afterward would live ungodly( 2 Peter 2:4-6). Jesus said, "As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be when I make my second coming( Luke 17:26) His meaning is that His second coming will be as unexpected as was the coming of the flood of Noah. I say these things to emphasize that the subject on which I speak this morning is a divinely revealed historical fact verified Christ Himself and by His apostles. It is possible to walk with God in times of the greatest corruption and depravity. We have proof of this in the example of Noah, his wife, and his sons. Noah believed God and prepared a huge houseboat, the size of which, challenges the imagination. In doing so he condemned the world, and became the heir of righteousness which is by faith. This disastrous event contains several interesting particulars which we shall consider in the order they stand.

The first point of interest is Noah was warned of things that would happen not seen as yet. What were the things that had not been seen up until that time. The things not seen yet that God warned Noah about were the flood and destruction of all flesh on earth. God warned him that He was going to do this. He was warned that everything in the earth shall die. When this warning was given, there was no appearance of a flood, either in the heavens or on the earth to to alarm the guilty sons of men. However, a deadly storm was preparing to punish them for their ungodliness and unrighteousness. Ungodliness refers to the duties man owes to Go; unrighteousness pertains to theduties we owe ur fellow human beings. God indeed is longsuffering ad waits to be gracious, but when his longsuffering grace continues to be abused, He suddenly destroys His enemies. God warned Noah that He would do something that He had never done before, and Noah was to warn a sinful world. God seldom punishes the guilty without giving them repeated warning. We learn this from a study of the Old Testament and God's treatment of the nation of Israel. God was merciful to Israel for 900 years before He punished them for their disobedience by allowing Solomon's temple to be destroyed and by sending them into Assyrian and Babylonian captivity.

Noah who was a preacher of righteousness warned them both by the building of the ark and his preaching. The time of warning was so long that those countriies which were at the greates distance from the place where Noah preached and built the ark, might hear and humble themselves before God. But we do not learn that one person in all the earth paid any regard either to what was said or done by Noah. Jesus said, "But as in the days of Noah, so also will be the coming of he Son of man be. For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of man be"(Matthew 24:37-39). In the 600th year of Noah'slife the degenerate races of mankind were cut off by the flood. But l20 years before the flood began, God had warned Noah of the catastrophe(Genesis 6;3}. During thos 120 years Noah had been preparing for the event by building the ark. I Peter 3: 20 says that during those 120 years , the Divine longsuffering of God waited while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls were saved through water. "

Secondly, we learn that not only was Noah warned, but he believed God and was moved by godly fear. There can be no relationship with God without faith in His word. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Every person should believe both the promises and the threatenings of God, for both will be accomplished. Some beliee in neither, and therefore remain unmoved either by hope or fear. God kindly warns them, but they refuse to believe and ignore the warning. What a blessing it would be if every accountable person, like Noah, would take God at His word. Then the sinful would be reclaimed from their evil way of life, and the righteous would be confirmed in their righteousness.

Thirdly, Noah prepared an ark to the saving of his family. The ark was a structure built according to the directions of God to preserve from the flood a remnant of the human race and of the animals associated with man. It was constructed of gopher wood which most likely cypress. It was divided into rooms ornests, and was three stories high. It was pitched within and without with asphalt. The ark was one and half the length of a football field, or 450 feet long, 75 ft wide, 45 ft. high. More than likely ithad a flat bottom. Calculations show that the boat contained a space of about 3, 500, 000 cubic feet. No mention is made in the Bible of a pilot for the ark. It seems to have been left to float where it may upon the waters. According to the Bible warning of the flood was given 120 years beforehand, and during that time Noah became a preacher of righteousness The family of Noah was sa ved on the account of his faith and oedience. O that we may be made the instrument of the salvatotopn of our families. To this end let us try to persuade wives, children and relatives to seek salvation by Christ, informing them of the certainty of perishing if they persevere in a worldly way of life, and neglect that only method of salvation, which God has appoointed through His beloved Son. Every soul in the old world perished, except Noah and his family for the water covered the earth and buried the highest mountains. The word of God also declares that every soul will perish who neglects the great salvation which the gospel offers to the world.

Fourthly, the Bible declares that is a g reat resemblance between how the family of Noah was saved in the time of the flood and how people are saved under the Christian religion. A notable comparison is made between how Noah's family was saved in the ark and how the gospel of Christ saves people in the Christian age of the world. We can learn something about our salvation in Christ by a careful study of the flood of Noah. The apostle Peter, as He was moved by the Holy Spirit to write these words, "When once the Divine longsuffering waited in he days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is eight souls were saved though water, which also after a true likeness does not save you, even baptism." The New King James version says, "Eight souls were saved by water. There is also an antitype which saves us–baptism.." Baptism in water in the Christian religion saves people like Noah's family was save through water when they entered th ark.

This remarkable comparison between the salvation of Noah's family and the salvation of Christians demands some explanation. It is difficult to see the comparison. They were saved in the ark and through water; the ark protected them from the flood, and the water bore up the ark which was the means of their salvation from the old world. Water was used to destroy the old world, but it was also used to save Noah's family. The water raised them up to a place of safety. Eight souls were saved through water, says the Bible which also after a true likeness does now save us, even baptism. What was he likeness? The waters of the flood raised up the ark and saved the occupants from the destruction of the pre-flood world. Secondly, these waters separated those who were saved from those who were drowned. Thirdly, the flood destroyed the evils of the old world and enabled Noah and his family to enter into a new existence on earth. People are saved by baptism today because it is the final step in Christ's plan of salvation which brings forgiveness of sins and enables one to escape the condemnation of the lost. Baptism is the line of demarcation between the lost and saved. If I were in a church who did not teach this fundamental truth about Christian salvation, I would get out of that church and find one who teaches the truth.

Finally, there is one more particular about the flood of Noah I find very interesting. The Bible says, "There were eight souls were saved in the ark and through the water." The eight souls were Noah and his wife, Shem, Ham, and Japheth and their wives. Noah is repeatedly praised in scripture as a devoted man of God, but standing in his shadow was a nameless woman about whom nothing is ever said. She is mentioned two or three times and always simply as "Noah's wife. But consider the godly qualities this woman must have had to live a man that their neighbors thought was a lunatic. Can you imagine how she must have felt when Noah came home one day and said, "Honey I am going to build a boat, the biggest boat that you have ever seen." By the way it was one and a half the length of a football field. I can almost hear her say, "Honey, you are going to build a boat on dry ground in Mesopotamia. This is a desert; where are you going to get the water? Honey, people will think you are a lunatic." Of course she didn't say that , but it wouldn't have surprised me if she had. She would have had to be very patient, understanding, and supportive to stand by a husband who for over a hundred years was mocked and ridiculed by others for building a huge boat in the middle of dry ground, the likes of which had never been seen before. He her friends must have whispered in the marketplace behind her back. And how they must have laughed when he began loading all those animals in that massive structure

For a century she endured persecution and scorn, not from her own doing but which came because of her love for a man who chose to listen to a call of his God, and who refused to be swayed by the world about him. How easy it would have been for her to give in such criticism and embarrassment to leave him. Probably many thought he had mental problems after that boat sat there after 50, 80, 75 and for over 100 years. But there is no evidence that she ever lost confidence in her husband. I think there is one more thing that should be said about Noah's wife. She was the second mother of the human race. In the flood of Noah all mothers perished from he earth except one, Noah's wife. There is no e evidence that Noah's sons had any children, for Peter said only eight souls were through water. After the flood of Noah, there was but one mother on the earth. The earth started all over again, and it started with her. All human life descended from her three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth. The human race as we know it today descended from the three women who mothered the children of Shem, Ham and Japheth. If you are a Jew you descended from Shem. If you are an Egyptian or an African, you descended from Ham. If you are a Gentile you descended from Japheth.

That is the true origin of all human beings today. We originally descended from Adam and Eve, but after the flood of Noah  all human beings descended from Noah and his wife by way of Shem, Ham and Japheth. How sad that in this far off day and time of advanced learning and knowledge that most of mankind has denied their origin. The worldly wise men of the world have convinced most of mankind that human beings originated from and finally after millions of years, the first human being was given birth by a mother Ape. Before you can believe that stuff, you will have tear out. many pages out of the Bible, Time and time again in the Bible God has said,"My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge."
